Matthew M. O’Connell

Matt O’Connell is an angel investor and consultant. He became President and CEO of GeoEye, a satellite and digital mapping firm, in 2003 and led the company’s dramatic growth and subsequent sale in January, 2013 to DigitalGlobe. Mr. O’Connell is regarded as a thought-leader in the digital mapping industry and has received many awards and honors. Mr. O'Connell serves on the U.S. Geospatial Intelligence Foundation's Board of Directors.   

Mr. O'Connell has extensive experience in communications management and finance. Prior to joining GeoEye, he was a managing director at Crest Advisors, a New York-based private merchant bank that invested in and advised communications companies (1997-2003).  Mr. O'Connell began his career on Wall Street as a lawyer specializing in mergers and acquisitions and corporate finance. Prior to his professional career, he  worked for two years as a musician.  Mr. O'Connell holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Classics from Trinity College, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and a Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia Law School.  He is married to Dr. Libby O’Connell, Chief Historian and Senior Vice President at The History Channel/A&E Television Networks. They have two grown children.
