National Trust for the Humanities (NTH)
is a charitable organization that was created in 1996 by a group of distinguished Americans who saw an urgent need to strengthen this nation’s intellectual and cultural life. Since its establishment, the Trust has raised millions of dollars to extend the reach and support the work of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
The Trust attracts support from individuals, foundations and businesses for a number of critical projects in the humanities. These special projects have included
Picturing America, EDSITEment, the Papers Project of Major Figures in History, as well as underwriting the 2022 book, VIEWPOINTS: 50 Years of the Jefferson Lecture in the Humanities. Your tax-deductible donations help support the work of the Trust.

What are the humanities?

“Humanities inspire us. The arts, history, literature, language, archaeology, ethics, and philosophy deepen our understanding of the human condition. In these turbulent times, this heightened awareness
can help strengthen and heal communities. The humanities give us tools to imagine a future of endless possibilities through the written and spoken word.”

The term “humanities” includes, but is not limited to, the study and interpretation of the following: language, both modern and classical; linguistics; literature; history; jurisprudence; philosophy; archaeology; comparative religion; ethics; the history, criticism and theory of the arts; those aspects of social sciences which have humanistic content and employ humanistic methods; and the study and application of the humanities to the human environment with particular attention to reflecting our diverse heritage, traditions, and history and to the relevance of the humanities to the current conditions of national life.
